Rice Library prepares for the future with new plans, programs
BY SARA LOWMAN
The most recent planning cycle for the physical expansion of Fondren Library began in 1992 and accelerated in mid-decade. Many features of the university remain familiar after 12 years: the publication of printed books and journals as a salient medium of scholarly exchange; the fundamental importance of a residential university as a forum for self discovery and intellectual growth; and the role of a library as central to one’s educational experience.

Current Projects
Fondren Library is developing an open-access digital archive of Rice scholarship and research. Included are the Digital Dissertation Project (an archive of Rice PhD dissertations), the Rice Institute Pamphlets online, and the Rice Thresher (weekly student newspaper) archive.
The Woodson Research Center posts its digitized archives and manuscripts on-line in this repository as well. Keep track of what's newly on-line from WRC by watching the Woodson On-line blog.
The Our Americas Archive partnership grant project funded by IMLS digitizing hundreds of Fondren's materials is also underway. See oaap.rice.edu.
