Staff Relations Committtee Report, July, 2001
Committee Members: Denise Arial (Co-chair), Chuck Bearden, Keith Chapman,
Tony Goodwyn, Erin McAfee (Co-chair), Janna Berry Raven, Jane Segal, Lisa
Sweeney, Denell Wiseman. What we've been working on:
- Raffle on Fondrenet for gift certificates ($20) for submitting reviews.
- Michael Vessels was the first winner. Next raffle will be Friday August
24th.
- Fondren Forum changes-Keith Chapman new editor, Tony Goodwyn now doing
formatting.
- Updates to Fondranet:
- Bulletin Board program for Fondranet
Erin McAfee and Chuck Bearden are working on finding a secure script which will allow the library staff to post messages on Fondranet. The committee discussed the problems with the staff posting inappropriate advertisements to LIBSTAFF. The committee decided that a new mailing list could be created for Fondranet. The new listserve could be accessable through email and through a bulletin board program on Fondranet. Messages such as cars for sale, animal adoptions, parties and other miscellaneous information could be posted on Fondranet.
-
Photo Archive
Erin McAfee is creating a photography database for the Fondren Staff. The purpose of the photo archive is to allow staff to browse other departments and gain familiarity with their coworkers. The staff will be able to browse through each department and match names with faces.
- Organizational Chart
A project is in the works to update the staff organizational chart. The organizational chart is linked from both the public and staff web pages. Staff members are listed by department with links to their respective homepages. These pages are in dire need of updating.
- Building Project Website
The Staff Relations Committee developed an internal website for the new library buidling project in the summer of 1999. In the last month the website has been completely redesigned. New committee pages have been created as well as new pages for minutes, construction updates, and links to other library projects.
- Beyond the Hedges
In an effort to keep the Beyond the Hedges section on Fondranet alive, the committee has created a raffle to increase staff participation. The staff are eligible to win a twenty dollar gift certificate for their submissions to the Readers Advisory, Movie Reviews, and Restaurant Recommendations.

Activities and Events Committee Report, July, 2001
Upcoming events:
- August 16, a Graduation celebration honoring the
library's staff who have earned MLS degrees this year.
- A Halloween party or contest (to be decided)
November "Festival of Salads"
- FRIDAY, DEC. 7 FESTIVAL OF NATIONS HOLIDAY PARTY
We are seeking volunteers to "chair" various themed tables.
Activities started off February 16 with a dues collection/ BarB Que
feast "Mardio-Rodegras." Interesting decorations were provided by many of
the staff, particularly Tony Narkin. A major portion of the yearly dues
were collected at that time.
If you still have not paid your dues, please come to me to settle up.
$15.00 per year for full time, $7.50 per year for part time. If you are
uncertain if you paid your dues, I can check that too.
March 2 was a sad occasion, a "Going Away" party for Paul Orkiszewski.
This was a cake and champagne punch reception with a "Meaty" gift theme.
March 15 we celebrated St. Patrick's day with a baked potato lunch.
Baked potatoes with all the toppings, including corned beef.
The major event for the spring/ summer was the library family picnic, held
Sunday, May 20 in the courtyard of the Rice Memorial Center. The beer was
cold and the grill was hot.
July 11 the production was an Ice Cream Social with all the toppings, and
the next day a "consolation" repeat especially for those who had been disappointed
when the ice cream was gone the day before.
July 27 was the occassion for "A Day in Provence" as we bid adieu and bon
voyage to Nancy Boothe on her retirement.
Special thank you to all the members of the committee. We invite anyone
who wants to join our happy band to come on board!

Work Environment Committee Report, July, 2001
Work Environment Committee Members are: Elizabeth Baber, Joe Hatfield(ex-officio), Lee Hilyer, Dolores Indalecio, Bob Sabin and Ruth Stiles.
Routine problems with the vending machines, coffe machine, garbage disposal, etc., in the staff lounge were mainly handled by the Chair of the Work Environment Committee. These kinds of problems are usually first reported to Debra Cosby, who then forwards them to the Chair. However, Debra is usually able to contac the appropriate repair person or company, and the problem gets fixed. Debra serves as a very important intermediary between the ibrary staff and the Committee, and we thank her for serving in that capacity.
One major repair this past semester was handled by Michael Vessels, who fixed the door on the microwave machine. He not only found where the broken part could be ordered, but he installed it as well. Thanks Mike!
For those of us who appreciate having a clean refrigerator in the staff lounge, we need to thank committee member Dolores Indalecio for making that possible. And, for those of us who enjoy having a fresh cup of coffee or cocoa every morning, we need to thank the following staff members who regularly replenish and service the coffee machine in the staff lounge. They are: Marshall Armintor, Nancy Boothe, David Bynog, Mary DuMont, Van Nguyen, and Mauricio Prado.
Also, our plants in the staff lounge would probably be dead if Kathy Knox had not been watering them for the past several years. That job has now gone to Alice Rhoades. Thank you all for making our lives in Fondren Library comfortable and enjoyable.
This year the Chair attended the Rice Recycling Certification Program. Gaols for the fall semester are to more formally organize our recycling efforts in the library.
