Fondren Library Rewards & Recognition Programs
Beth Shapiro Library Staff Innovation Award
The Shapiro Library Staff Innovation award is an annual award that shall be presented to a member(s) of the Fondren Library staff who has "developed an innovative program to provide library services at Rice University or who has shown exemplary service to the University community."
Nominations for the award will be called for annually in January and may be made by any library employee, or other member of the Rice community. Self-nominations will also be accepted.

Owlet Appreciation Program
The Owlet Appreciation Program is an ongoing, on-the-spot recognition system intended to acknowledge immediate and spontaneous appreciation for the contributions of Fondren Staff.
- Submit and Owlet
The program consists of personal, handwritten thank you notes written by Fondren staff to fellow staff members, which make the recipients eligible to participate in a monthly Owlet drawing for a $25 bonus added to your paycheck.
Recipients will also be recognized more publicly, by an e-mail from the library director, distributed to all library staff.
Fondren-based F&E staff are also eligible to participate in this program.

Distinguished Employee Award
This award is to honor and recognize those employees who have gone above and beyond the call of duty, that share and support the mission of Rice, that bring a charm and quality to their job that's supportive, encouraging and beneficial not only to enhancing departmental operations, but to their coworkers' daily lives as well.Recipients are nominated by either their peers or supervisor and the award is extended to only those who are most deserving. Elizabeth Gillis Service Award
The Elizabeth Gillis Service Award has been established to recognize a Rice University staff member's outstanding serivce to the University. The award has been named after Mrs. Gillis in an effort to recognize and honor her unflagging commitment and service to Rice. The primary purpose of the award is to annually recognize significant achievements and service of a staff member in support of the overall mission of the University. This award will be presented at the Annual Service Awards Luncheon.
Board of Trustees Recognition Award
The program, initiated by President Malcolm GIllis in 1995, honors staff for their outstanding performance and service to the University at meetings of the Rice Board of Trustees.
Nomination: Several weeks before each quarterly meeting of the Board of Trustees, the Deans and the Vice Presidents are solicaited by HR for nominations.
Fondren Library staff should send any recommendations for this program to the Director, Fondren Library, with a request that pending her review, she endorse it and forward it on to the appropriate Dean or Vice President.Recognition: Approximately one week before the Board of Trustees meeting, in cooperation with the supervisor, employees chosen for the recognition will be contacted by HR and be advised of the time and date of the presentation, as well as the reason for the recognition. The President then introduces the staff member being recognized to the Board and talks about the outstanding service that led to the honor. His statement is condensed and the employee receives a printed copy. A specially framed certificate memorializing the recognition is also presented.
