Shapiro Library Staff Innovation Award

  1. The Shapiro Library Staff Innovation Award is an annual award that shall be presented to a member(s) of the Fondren Library staff who has "developed an innovative program to provide library services at Rice University or who has shown exemplary service to the University community."

  2. Nominations for the award may be made by any library employee, or other member of the Rice community. Self-nominations will also be accepted. Nominations should be made in the form of a letter addressed to the selection committee detailing the innovative service program created or by detailing the involvement of the nominee in the service of Fondren Library and the greater University community.

  3. The Award Selection Committee shall be comprised of one faculty member, one student worker employed by the library, and three members of the library staff. Selection of the faculty member will be made in consultation with the University Standing Committee on the Library, the student in consultation with the supervisors of the library student workers. In each case, the relevant body will be asked to suggest the names of possible members and submit them to the Staff Travel and Development Committee. That committee will then select the persons to be contacted to serve as volunteer members to the Award Selection Committee. The staff members on the committee will be the chairperson of the Staff Travel and Development Committee and two other staff members, one being a member of the professional library staff and the other a member of the paraprofessional library staff. The two staff members will be selected by the Staff Travel and Development Committee from a pool of volunteers. The chairperson of the Staff Travel and Development Committee will act as the chairperson of the Award Selection Committee. Members of the Staff Travel and Development Committee and staff members serving on the Award Selection Committee will not be eligible for the award in years they are members of either committee.

  4. Nominations for the award will be called for during the month of January with submission of nominations to end no later than mid-February. Nominations will be submitted to the chairperson of the Award Selection Committee. Nomination letters will be distributed to the members of the Award Selection Committee by the chairperson of the committee. The Award Selection Committee will make its selection of the recipient of the award by March 31st of the year. The Director of Fondren Library will present the award in a public ceremony in mid-April.

  5. The award may not be presented every year. The funds will remain in the endowment fund and be made available for use in a subsequent year.
