Computer Access

Public Workstations:

Computers for public research are located directly around the Reference Desk on the first floor of the library. Computers for online catalog searching are also available on each floor.

Fondren Library offers Internet access to the public for library research; all of the online resources¹ that are otherwise unavailable for public off-campus use are freely available to anyone inside the library.

¹ Exceptions: Beilstein/Gmelin database, Cambridge Crystallographic Database, and SciFinder Scholar. Licensing restrictions limit access to these databases to current Rice University faculty, staff and students only.

Remote access to  library resources

Computer access for email and word processing is not available to the public.

The computers in the Government Publications and Microforms area located in Fondren's basement are available for locating and using library resources, patents and trademarks, and government information only.

For more information about Fondren Library's computer policies, please check the signs posted in the Reference Area.

Wireless Access:

There are two wireless networks available on all Library floors.

Rice Visitor:  Anyone is allowed to connect to this wireless, including outside patrons.  Access to license-restricted library resources (such as journals and databases) is not permitted through this network, nor is printing available.

To access the Rice Visitor Wireless simply open your web browser, and accept the certificate offered (clicking OK). You will see a login page  that asks for a username and password to be submitted before you can access the wireless network. Username: visitor Password: visitor

Rice Owls (RiceNet2): Available to current Rice students, faculty and staff - see instructions for registering your laptop and accessing.  Network permits access to license-restricted library resources (such as journals and databases); printing is supported.
