Capt. Baker's Correspondence, 1873-1932  

Capt. James A. Baker to his mother-in-law,
27 July 1873

Content: Baker writes that he misses "those I love and who love me" and wishes that his children would write him. Also expresses his fear that his means are too disproportionate to "gratify, qualify, adorn, and beautify" the lives of his children.

25 October 1874

Content: Baker recounts the good time he had at the Texas Military Institute supper, where he was introduced to "several pretty young ladies", as well as mentioning that he played croquet and heard some music that reminded him of "home sweet home".

20 November 1874

Content: Baker lets his father know that he will take his advice and "think more about what I read in the future." Also tells him about his dormitory at the Texas Military Institute and informs him that his quarterly report will be sent home soon.

Content: Baker talks about how much he enjoys school and Austin, but adds that he would rather live in Huntsville than in any other place. Mentions that he must attend church in ranks and therefore, only attends Methodist, Episcopal, or Baptist churches.

12 January 1932

Content: Baker expresses his joy over having his granddaughter home for the holidays and tells her how fond the servants are of her kindness. Also talks about her mother (his daughter) having attended a party hosted by then Rice President Edgar O. Lovett.
