Dunban, John R. Letters. 1864-1865. (MS 150)

This collection consists of letters written John Dunban wrote this collection of letters between 1864 and 1865 to his family at the end of the Civil War. Dunban served in Co. H. 77th Regiment of the Pennsylvania Volunteers and writes about his family and their farm and news of his regiment, including unfair elections, the "dumb ague," mutinous feelings in his regiment, and the treatment of deserters. The letters also contain descriptions of Texas and Louisiana. (12 items)

Biographical Note

John R. Dunban was a private in the Union Army during the U.S. Civil War. He served in the 77th Regiment of the Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, which was involved in the Battle of Shiloh in 1862 and the Siege of Atlanta, Georgia in 1864. Dunban was stationed in including Blue Springs, Strawberry Plains, and Nashville, Tennessee; New Orleans, Louisiana; and Victoria, Texas.

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of twelve letters. Most are written by John R. Dunban to his family in the last years of the Civil War (1864-1865). The content of the letters is mostly personal but also contains descriptions of the states Dunban was stationed in and news of his regiment. Dunban writes about war-related issues such as the "dumb ague" sickness, treatment of army deserters, and elections held within the regiment. There are also two letters addressed to Dunban--one from C.M. Rogers, and one from an unknown writer.
