Biographical NoteThe name of the House of Orange-Nassau was adopted by René of Châlon, the son of Hendrik III of Nassau-Breda from Germany, and and Claudia of Châlon-Orange from French Burgundy. René of Châlon’s nephew, William I, became his successor and also made the House of Orange-Nassau an important political family in the Netherlands. William I organized a revolt against Spanish rule of the Netherlands, which eventually led to Dutch independence. Princes of Orange from that era include Prince Philip William, Maurice, Frederick Henry, Willem II, William II of England, and John William Friso.
