Historical Sketch

Lovett was the seventh residential college to be built at Rice. It was named after the first president of the university, Edgar Odell Lovett. It was opened 1968 and was an all male college until 1980 when it went co-ed.

Lovett is a six-story building and is sometimes referred to as the toaster. It has a brick grating enclosing the hallways outside of the rooms. Designed in 1960's during the time of riots, the architects considered this in their design. Lovett was called "riot proof." The dual access to the outdoor hallways ensured the students could not be trapped in their rooms.

The collection consists of 12 boxes documenting basic business workings of the Edgar Odell Lovett College at Rice University. It includes Central Committee meeting minutes, college documents, such as the Constitution, Coat-of-Arms, member lists, telephone lists, Treasurer's reports, Masters files, theatrical productions, as well as correspondence, e-mail and news clippings. Dates range from 1968-2007.
