Archives Tour Opportunity for Houston-Area High School Students Attention: High School Librarians and History, English, and Science Teachers (Please distribute this flyer to appropriate school personnel.)

The Woodson Research Center (WRC) would like to introduce area high schools students to the value of conducting research with original source materials by conducting free tours of its repository, offering student and teacher resource packets and explaining the unique importance of archival resources.

WRC's collections are open to the public and include rare books, photographs, audio, video, and artifacts related to history of science; U.S. Civil War and Southern history; British history and drama; and business, religious, performing arts and political activities of Houston and Texas. Scholars from all over the world make appointments to access this valuable collection.

Increase your students' access to and knowledge of archival materials in order to meet the requirements of:

  • National Standards
  • Texas Standards - TEKS (History and English)
  • International Baccalaureate extended essay
  • Honors/Advanced Placement courses
  • Future college and professional research and writing tasks

To explore the possibility of bringing your high school tour groups to Woodson, please call us at 713-348-2586 or complete our on-line questionnaire.

The WRC will be available for tours beginning with the spring semester 2006.

Visit the Woodson's website http://library.rice.edu/collections/WRC, which includes on-line exhibits and a searchable database (Fondren Digital Collections). These digitized archives feature Houston historical figures such as architect William Ward Watkin, attorney Captain James A. Baker, WAC Director & Houston newspaper publisher Oveta Culp Hobby and Governor James Stephen Hogg, and the ill-fated Maximillian, Emperor of Mexico, and his wife Charlotte.

Thank you in advance for completing the online survey. We look forward to working with you in the future to invigorate your students' research efforts.
