Current Collection Policy:

Purpose:

To support instruction and study at the Bachelor of Arts degree in Classics, Greek and Latin.

General Collection Guidelines:

  1. Language Coverage: Classical material in Greek and Latin as well as all European languages is collected.
  2. Chronological Coverage: The Classical period runs approximately from 3000 B.C. to the late 5th century A.D.. In addition, material which covers the effects of ancient Greece and Rome on subsequent time periods will also be purchased.
  3. Geographical Coverage: The primary geographic area for the collection is on the Mediterranean area. However, since the effects of Greek and Roman culture extended far beyond this area, some material may be purchased on the effects of ancient Greece and Rome on other parts of Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
  4. Types of Materials: The majority of materials will be acquired in the form of books and periodicals. These will include bibliographies, monographs, theses, dissertations, reports, proceedings, serial publications, dictionaries and encyclopedias. Reprints and microforms will be acquired when needed.
  5. Date of Publication: Emphasis is on current publications although some retrospective purchasing will be allowed when needed to fill in collection gaps to support instruction and research.
