Music

The music collection primarily supports the educational and research needs of the Shepherd School of Music. The focus is on the western classical music tradition, although there are materials relating to jazz, folk music, musical theater, and ethnomusicology.

MUSICThe music collection consists of over 100,000 books, scores, audio and videorecordings, microforms, and rare materials, which support the educational and research needs of the Shepherd School of Music. The collection also serves as a resource for all Rice University faculty, staff and students, as well as the wider Houston community. The focus is on the western classical music tradition, although materials relating to jazz, folk music, musical theater, world music and other popular music genres are also collected.


  • Scores and books on music, including music periodicals, are located on the third floor of Fondren Library.
  • Sound and video recordings are located on the first floor at the Fondren circulation desk. These can be requested for in house listening/viewing by anyone with a photo I.D., or checked out by persons with a valid Rice I.D. or Friends of Fondren card. 

Music course reserve materials are located on the first floor at the Fondren circulation desk.

Music microform materials are located in the Government Publications department in the basement of Fondren.

Rare music materials are kept in the Library Service Center and can be requested online for use in the first floor Woodson Research Center.  Some rare music materials are permanently housed in the WRC.
