Resource Guide for the Violin

M, ML, and MT CLASS NUMBERS

Books and scores are arranged on the shelves according to the M class numbers of the Library of Congress Classification System. Scores are shelved under M, books on music under ML, and music instructional materials such as methods, exercises, and orchestral studies under MT. Within each class number, scores are shelved alphabetically by composer,

books (in most classes) alphabetically by author. For violin music, the most

important numbers to remember are M42 (solo unaccompanied), M219-221 (violin

sonatas, suites or variations, and pieces respectively, all accompanied by

piano), and M1013(violin concertos, piano reduction). Browse the scores shelved

under these class numbers to get an idea of the library's holdings. Remember, though: many scores may be checked out or kept at the off-campus Library Service Center. Always check in Webcat, Fondren’s online catalog, to determine the library's complete holdings of cello music.
