TIFF Viewer Downlading Guide
In order to see the images of fulltext patents on the PTO website
(http://www.uspto.gov/patft/) your computer must have a Tagged-Image
File Format (TIFF) viewer. TIFF viewers allow your computer to read
TIFF image files in a similar way to a web browser. While there are
many types of TIFF viewers the PTDL suggests downloading the
AlternaTIFF viewer to your computer so that the “Images” button in a
patent record will work. Given below are the steps for downloading:
- Go to the following url: http://www.uspto.gov/patft/
- Click on the link ‘how to access full-page images’ http://www.alternatiff.com/ to get to the download screen (MAC users should select Quicktime http://www.apple.com/software/)
Netscape Installation
- Click on the link ‘alternatiff-1_6_0.exe’
- Save the file ‘alternatiff-1_6_0.exe’ to your computer.
- Click on the file ‘alternatiff-1_6_0.exe’, after it downloads click ‘close’ on the download box.
- On Winzip self extractor, click ‘setup’
- On AlternaTiff Plug-in Set-up click ‘install’.
- AlternaTiff will be installed to your browser

Internet Explorer Users (autoinstall)
- Click on the http://www.alternatiff.com/install/ link.
- Then click on Auto-install AlternaTIFF ActiveX control link.
- Click ‘Yes’ to the security warning that will pop-up.
- After installation, if you have never installed AlternaTIFF on
your computer before, you will need to register AlternaTIFF. If that is
the case, you will the message "TIFF viewer not registered. Click here
to register." at the bottom of this page. Click where it says to, and
follow the instructions.
- When you see the message "the AlternaTIFF ActiveX control is
installed in your browser" at the bottom of this page, you're done.
