Monetary Gifts

The University welcomes monetary contributions in any amount to the Library.

Library Endowments

Donations of $25,000 or more can be named endowments, in support of specific collections and Library facilities. Income from these named funds helps buy materials in general areas designated either by the donor or by Fondren Library. In each volume acquired with the revenue from the endowments, a bookplate identifies the endowment.

Monetary Gifts in Memory or in Honor of Friends and Family

Monetary gifts are accepted by the University libraries to purchase a volume in honor/memory of friends, family, faculty, recent graduates, etc. Donations should be directed to the Friends of Fondren Library. For each $50 donation, a bookplate identifying the donor (and/or honoree) is placed in a volume selected by Fondren Library. Once library materials have been selected, acquired and processed, the gift will be recorded in the Fondren Library online catalog. Gifts under $50 are added to the general gifts fund.

Appraisals and Acknowledgments

All gifts are subject to the regulations of the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, which prohibits the recipient from providing the appraisal of the donation.

Fondren Library acknowledges gifts by letter and in The Flyleaf, the newsletter of the Friends of Fondren.

Gifts In Kind

It is the Library's policy to accept donations of books, etc. on the understanding that they are then owned by the University, just as are purchased materials. The Library's administration reserves the right to decide whether the gift becomes part of the collection, as well as its disposition, location, and treatment.

Donated materials might be given or sold to sister libraries, sold to a book dealer, or donated to the Friends of Fondren Book Sale. Donors may, at the time of the donation, request that whatever is not added to the Library's collections be returned - in this event, we require that you provide a bibliography of the potential donated titles to the Assistant University Librarian for Collections. This list will be reviewed and only those titles desired for the Fondren Library collection will be accepted.

Occasionally, large and/or specialized collections are offered to Fondren Library. The Library gladly accepts such collections, provided that, in the professional opinion of the Library's staff, the materials are significant, accessible, and relevant to the collections and academic programs at Rice University. There must also be enough shelf space, staffing and other resources for processing and maintenance. Gifts of rare books and manuscripts are accepted by the Woodson Research Center of Fondren Library. The Archivist will determine when the gift will be placed in Special Collections or is displosed of in some other way, including sale or exchange.
