A guide to finding Music in Fondrens Catalog

Finding Music in LIBRIS WebCat

The following are instructions for finding scores and recordings of musical works in LIBRIS, the computerized catalog for Fondren Library

  • Basic Seach
  • Search Results
  • Generic Titled Works
  • Uniform Titles
  • Scores Only or Recordings Only
  • Searching For Specific Instrumentation
  • Modifying Your Search
  • Specific Item Type (score, recording)
  • Sorting Results

Basic Search

Select Keyword on the basic Search LIBRIS screen. Type what you know of the composer's name and title of the work and/or instrumentation. In general, it is better to use only the operative words. Pachelbel, for example, is as effective as Johann Pachelbel. Opus numbers and thematic catalog numbers (e.g. "K" numbers for Mozart, "RV" for Vivaldi) may be used. Click search everything.

Examples:

bach and goldberg variations

ravel and tombeau de couperin and piano

mozart and k 550

Search Results

LIBRIS displays the results of searches in reverse order of accession. The latest item added to the catalog displays first and the oldest item last. Usually, this means that the most recently published materials display first, but there are often older titles mixed in. Search results can be tailored (see "Modifying Your Search-Sorting Results" below), but in general it is highly recommended that searches be as specific as possible to avoid unnecessary scrolling through a large number of records.

Generic Titled Works

Many works have a generic title: symphony, fugue, prelude, etude, overture, concerto, etc. In general, either use the plural form of the title or truncate using the $ sign.

Examples:

vivaldi and bassoon concertos and RV 501

chopin and preludes and op 28

haydn and symphon$ and 104

Uniform Titles

Music is published throughout the world in a wide variety of languages. To gather all the different versions of a work in one place, the library assigns a uniform title.

Examples:

Goldberg variations = Goldberg-Variationen

rite of spring = Vesna sviashchennaia

Moonlight sonata = Sonatas, piano, no. 14, op. 27, no. 2, C# minor

To find a uniform title, type what you know in a keyword search and look at one of the resulting records. The uniform title should appear near the top of the record, or it may be combined with the composer's name near the bottom. Once you find the uniform title, redo the search using one or more elements from the uniform title.

Examples: Search 1 Search 2
bach and art of fugue bach and kunst der fuge
    beethoven and eroica symphony

beethoven and symphonies and op 55

Scores Only or Recordings Only

To limit your search to scores only, add the words "not sound" to the end of your search.

Examples:

bach and musikalisches opfer not sound

mahler and lied von der erde not sound

To limit your search to recordings only, add the words "and sound" to the end of your search.

Examples:

donizetti and lucia di lammermoor and sound

mozart and clarinet quintets and sound

Searching For Specific Instrumentation

The scores are arranged according to the Library of Congress Classification System which assigns call numbers by instrumentation and genre.

Examples:

String quartets

M452

Orchestral Symphonies

M 1001

Operas

M 1500

Song Collections

M 1620

Do a keyword search to locate a score that matches the instrumentation you need (see "Scores Only or Recordings Only" section above). Then click on the call number to get a list of items with similar call numbers.

Modifying Your Search

Searches can be modified with various options that control either the type of material searched or how it is displayed. Search options are at the bottom of the Complex Search Screen; use the scroll bar to move down if you do not see the options available. Search options remain in effect until they are cleared or you change to another type of search.

Specifying item type:

Choose cd or score from the "item type" pull-down menu.

Sorting Results:

Searches can be sorted chronologically, alphabetically by author, title, or subject. Make your selection from the "sort by" pull-down menu at the bottom of the search window.
