Finding Online and Print Periodicals

Finding journals, magazines, newspapers using the electronic journal portal and the library catalog.

Fondren Library subscribes to 36,000 periodicals (journals, magazines, and newspapers) and many of these are available online.  The online journals are accessible from the electronic journal portal (E-Journal Portal).

You can access the E-Journal Portal from the Fondren web site by clicking on full-text journals listed under the research tab.

In the E-Journal portal, type the title of the journal into the space provided and click search.  Omit any beginning articles and don't use abbreviations.

The resulting page will list your periodical if the library has access to it.  You may find several listings.  Look at the range of dates covered in each and click on the link that matches the date you need.  This should take you to the periodical (or publisher web site).  You may have to search for your journal on that web site.

If you don't find the periodical or the issue you need in the E-Journal Portal. . .

do a search in the Fondren Library catalog for print journals.

From the main page of the catalog type the title of your periodical.  Make sure to click begins with and select periodical title from the pull-down menu before clicking on search catalog.

You will find your journal listed if it is held by Fondren.  Click on the title to get full information, including call number (upper left corner), and the list of volumes and issues available (see "current issues" and "holdings").  You may need to scroll down to see the list of holdings.

Note:  Many older volumes are kept off site in the Library Service Center. To request these:

Rice I.D. holders:  click on hold next to the volumes needed and fill out the form.

Others:  go to this LSC request form.
