Circulation Policies for Non-Rice-affiliated borrowers

including Friends of Fondren, HARLiC, and On-Site Interlibrary Loan

Borrowing Privileges

  • To borrow material from the Fondren Library, one of the following cards is required:  Friends of Fondren, Houston Area Research Libraries Consortium (HARLiC) or Reciprocal Faculty Borrowing Program (OCLC) borrowing card is required.
  • A variety of institutes and organizations have borrowing privileges at the library.  Please call the Circulation Desk at 713-348-4021 to inquire about your eligibility.
  • Borrowing privileges are not transferable, and only one type of borrowing card is permitted per individual.  
  • Fondren Library is open to patrons who are 18 years or older and have a valid photo ID. A parent or guardian must accompany those under 18.


What You May Borrow

  • Books from the general collection circulate to all registered borrowers.
  • Reference, reserve, current periodicals, and materials from the Woodson Research Center can be used inside the library.
  • Feature films, study room keys, and interlibrary loan services are not available to Non-Rice-affiliated borrowers.
  • Restrictions may apply to materials from the Business Information Center and Government Publications.


Borrowers' Responsibilities

  • You must use a borrowing card in combination with a photo ID to check out material.
  • You are responsible for all materials and fines charged to your account. 
  • It is your responsibility to monitor your user status. View your user status online or inquire at the Circulation Desk.
  • Inform the Circulation Desk of lost IDs and address changes immediately, since you are responsible for all items charged to your account.
  • Return on-time material to the Circulation Desk or to the Book Returns at the entrances of the library.
  • If your items are overdue, please return them directly to the Circulation Desk and pay overdue fines.


Special Circulation Services



  • Holds: You may request that a book charged out to another borrower be held for you when it is returned.
  • Searches: You may ask the Circulation staff to search for a book you cannot find on the shelf. When the book is available you will be notified.
  • Library Service Center (LSC) requests: Items requested and retrieved from the LSC may be borrowed from the Reserve Desk.  Allow one business day for processing and retrieval.
  • Online User Services: 

    Use our online user services to view your user status, renew books, place holds or recalls and to request items from storage. Obtain your personal PIN at the Circulation Desk.

    To access Fondren Library's online user services, visit http://library.rice.edu, select "Catalog" from the menu bar at the top of the page, select "User Services," then select the desired service and enter the following information:

    • User ID (string of numbers on your card - no spaces)
    • PIN


Loan Periods

  • All Non-Rice-affiliated borrowers have a loan period of 28 days.
  • The maximum number of books to be borrowed is four.
  • Non-Rice-affiliated borrowers are limited to one renewal.


Recalls:

  • Books that are recalled must be returned by the recall due date.
  • Materials needed for course reserves are subject to immediate recall.

Renewals

  • Materials can be renewed online or at the Circulation Desk.


Fines


  • As a courtesy, the library sends notices for overdue, lost, and recalled materials; however, you are responsible for all fines incurred on your library account even if you do not receive an overdue notice.
  • Borrowing privileges and online User Services are suspended with one overdue item or an accumulation of $5.00 in fines.

  • Overdue Books, CDs and DVDs .......... $1.00 per day       ($50 maximum)
  • Overdue Recalls ................................  $1.00 per day       ($50 maximum)


Lost Or Damaged Material

  • If library materials are damaged while charged out to your ID, you will be billed for the cost of the repair.
  • Materials that are lost or cannot be repaired are billed at current replacement value, plus processing fees.
  • All lost or damaged materials remain the property of Fondren Library.
  • If library materials are already damaged, alert Circulation staff before checking out the items.


Copiers

Self-service copy machines are located throughout the library. Copier machines accept copy cards, and a limited number also accept cash. A color copier is located in the Brown Fine Arts Library.

Color copies......................................... $1.00 per copy

Change

Change for bills up to $10 is available at the Circulation Desk.

Printing

Laser printers are attached to most public use computers.  These printers operate with copy cards and the charge for printing is ten cents per page.

Wireless access

Wireless access is available on all library floors.

No Smoking

Fondren Library is a smoke-free building.

Food & Drink

Drinks must be in a covered container and food is restricted to the fourth-floor coffee lounge near Elevator A. 


Telephones

Local calls may be made using the telephones located by the first-floor ATM near Elevator A and the telephone near Stair D in the center of the first floor.  Dial 9 for an off-campus number.
