Who has access to online resources through the Fondren Library?

• Outside the library - only current Rice ID holders: the current faculty, students and staff

Help

Why these restrictions?

Licenses with our commercial and scholarly publishers define how the resources may be accessed and used:

• Use should be restricted to academic research and teaching

• Systematic downloading of resources is prohibited

• Content should not be made available on servers/websites that are openly accessible, nor should copyright marks be obstructed or removed

• Use is subject to University policies, including Appropriate Use of Computer Resources and Intellectual Property Policy

Alternatives

How do I achieve remote access?

(New) Rice Proxy (effective, July 15, 2009). All library resources previously available via proxy are available via the new system; Fondren staff will be adding all library resources to the proxy over the next year.

1. Click on a link in the catalog, the ejournal portal or library website - when off-campus, you will be asked to log in
2. Log in, using your NetID and password
3. You will be connected to the resource
Users of the "old" Rice proxy may need to separate their browser from the old machine.  Click here for instructions on how to separate your browser from the old proxy

VPN (Virtual Private Network)
Please read, and follow, the VPN documentation to establish your VPN account and learn how to install the software. Achieving VPN access does require advance planning to establish your account and you must visit the Help Desk at Mudd room 103 in person and with your Rice photo ID to activate that account.

SciFinder, Beilstein, & ARTStor require VPN due to the nature of their software interfaces

Click here for a description of how to use VPN once installed.
