VPN & Proxy information

Description of how VPN and proxy work after installed


VPN

VPN provides access to library resources marked rice only or on proxy or unrestricted

VPN does not:

  • • operate automatically "in the background"
  • • prompt you to login
First install the VPN client and RiceNet.pcf as per instructions.
VPN needs to be activated by you before you attempt to connect to a "Rice only" resource (such as the library's online journals and databases).
VPN will continue operating until you disconnect it - VPN will slow down your computer's network traffic and so should be active only when needed

If you fail to activate VPN, the IP-restricted resource will either deny you access, or ask you for a non-existent, resource-specific password! Back up until you see the library's headers/footers and activate VPN

Proxy

Only items indicated as on proxyor unrestrictedmay be accessed through the Rice Proxy.
First configure your browser as described in the instructions on the Rice proxy website. Having completed this configuration, you will need to make no future updates - the browser will automatically capture the current Rice proxy permissions file every time you connect to the internet.
When you attempt to login to a IP-restricted, web resource listed in the proxy file, you will be prompted to sign in using your standard Rice username and password. See the login screen at https://proxy.rice.edu/login.php to see what this looks like. The proxy will automatically provide you access to all proxied resources for 2 hours. (After 2 hours will you be asked to reconfirm/log back in.)

If you are asked to log in by a journal or other resource itself:

1) confirm that you have fully configured you browser, including any notes/patches for your browser version and platform

  • 2) the resource is not actually licensed for Rice University users (always check dates of journal coverage, for example, when using our Ejournal Portal listing)

  • 3) the resource is not proxied - the library's web listings of resources all indicate which titles are on proxy and unrestricted.
