Rice University is an active subscriber to ArtStor, a non-profit digital library of more than 1.8 million images covering the arts, architecture, the humanities, and the social sciences, as well as a growing selection of science related images. ArtStor allows Rice community members to search a wide breadth of digital images for inclusion in slideshows or for export as individual files. ArtStor’s newest feature, Images for Academic Publishing (IAP), makes available a growing collection of publication-quality images for use in scholarly publications free of charge.
Rice community members with questions about ArtStor usage or features may contact Kelley Vernon, Curator of Visual Resources, via e-mail (email@example.com) or phone (713-348-3324).
Beginning in 2012, Rice University become a subscriber to Shared Shelf, Artstor’s hosted multi-media management and cataloging system that allows community members to create local digital project collections and publish out to the larger ArtStor collection. Rice’s Shared Shelf collections currently published into the ArtStor workspace include the Rice Art History Collection, Archives and Special Collections, and the Rio de Janeiro Iconography project.
Shared Shelf enables Rice community members to manage, store, use and publish institutional and personal media collections within their institution or publicly on the web through Shared Shelf Commons and Omeka. Benefits of the service include cataloging tools with customizable metadata schemes, links to controlled vocabularies, and powerful workspace tools for visual content, as well as remote storage and backup of media files.
Shared Shelf offers many possibilities for Rice faculty members with unique media collections who are looking for opportunities to share these collections through classroom use or broader community availability. If interested in learning more about the possibility of creating a Shared Shelf collection, please contact Monica Rivero, Digital Curation Coordinator (firstname.lastname@example.org) or Kelley Vernon, Curator of Visual Resources (email@example.com).
