FAQ Course Reserves

What material can be placed on Course Reserve?

  • library books
  • personal books

What are the loan periods for material on course reserves?

Professors choose from the following:
  • Two hour
  • Two hour/overnight (material charged either 4 hours before closing, or after 10pm on nights the library does not close, will be due at 10am the next day or one hour after opening on days the library opens after 9am.)
  •  One day (24 hours)
  • Three days (72 hours)

Will instructors have to submit material new every semester?

  • Yes. Please be prepared to retrieve personal items when the semester is over. We cannot retain personal materials from semester to semester.

How can students use Fondren Reserve Material?

  • Request by call number at the Fondren Reserve Desk.
  • The call number can be looked up in our catalog under the reserves tab.
  • A student ID is required to borrow reserve material.
  • For electronic reserves your Professor or instructior supplies you with the correct access information


What are the deadlines for instructors and professors to submit material for course reserve?

  • Faculty should request reserves by July 25 for the Fall semester and November 25 for the Spring semester.

Is there a limit on the number of articles instructors may submit for electronic reserves?

  • Yes, we request that there be no more than 60 electronic reserve articles per course each semester.

How is copyright handled?

  • Copyright compliance for electronic reserve will be obtained by library staff who can be contacted at reserve@rice.edu

Can I have articles online as well as in paper form on course reserve?

  • Yes, Use the form for Electronic Reserve and in the comment line mention that you also want the material available in paper form.


What file formats are acceptable for electronic reserves course materials?

  • We recommend that instructors use PDF files (Portable Document Format from Adobe Acrobat) or World Wide Web compatible documents (i.e. HTML, VRML, ASCII text, etc.) so that students can access the course materials using the most common computer platforms (Windows, Macintosh, and UNIX). PDF Readers and Web browsers are available without charge on the campus network or the Internet.
  • Materials for Electronic Reserves are acceptable in file formats created using any standard word processing software such as Word and Word Perfect.
  • When you turn in material in paper form please make sure that the copies are clearly readable and not folded or stapled to assure scanability.

Will the library scan material if I do not have an electronic file?

  • The library will scan course reserves materials into an Adobe PDF document if you do not have an electronic file.Please make sure to bring in clearly readable copies that are not stapled or folded to assure scanability.
