Library Fines and Charges

Understand your borrowing responsibilities, loan periods and associated fines with a Rice ID.

Fondren assesses fines and fees for overdue, lost or damaged materials. Faculty, Students and Staff are responsible for ensuring the library has updated contact information including e-mail, mailing address and phone number.

  • Rice University Faculty, Students and Staff will be sent three notices when an item becomes overdue.

  • Failure to return an item and respond to a third notice will change the status of the item to lost, and result in a materials and processing charge for each unreturned item.

  • Overdue items or bills of $5.00 or more will prevent online renewals and self-checkouts.

  • Students: any unpaid bills may prevent you from obtaining your diploma and transcripts.

  • Staff and Faculty: As per the HR Benefits website, any amounts owed to Rice may be deducted from your final check.

  • Fines may be paid by cash or check at the Circulation desk. Four to six weeks after a third notice, all Student, Faculty and Staff charges will be sent to the Cashier’s Office.
