Collaborative Study Spaces

The Fondren Library has collaborative workplaces located throughout the building. There is also a study area on the sixth floor reserved for use by the Rice community.  Collaborative study spaces are equipped with:

  • Lounge seating and tables

  • Outlets for laptops
  • Wireless access for Rice students, faculty and staff

  • Group Study 2


    Rooms 201 and 601 have flat-screen wall TVs and connections for video/audio from laptop computers as well as personal DVD and VCR machines.  Rice students, faculty and staff may check out the key to these rooms at the Circulation Desk.  Reservations may be made for one or a small number of sessions in 201 or 601.

Study Rooms

Private, keyed study rooms are located throughout the building for use by Rice students, staff and faculty.

  • There are several group study rooms for 4-8 people in addition to smaller rooms.

  • Some study rooms have whiteboards and/or windows.
  • Study rooms have wireless access.
  • Study room keys are checked out at the Circulation Desk for immediate use.
  • Study rooms cannot be reserved ahead of time.
  • The loan period is 4 hours.
  • Study room keys turned in late are subject to a fine of $5/hour beginning in the first fraction of an hour when the key becomes overdue. There is no grace period.

Study Carrels

Study carrels in Fondren Library are issued to ABD (All But Dissertation) and other graduate students, for a period of one year, contingent upon availability.

  • Each study carrel has desk space, a chair, shelves for books, a shallow drawer, and a small locker for personal items.

  • The Study Carrel Application form must be signed by your Department Chair or Advisor and returned to the Circulation Desk at Fondren Library.
    Books can be checked out to your study carrel and kept there for convenient reference.  Please note that these books can be recalled and retrieved from your carrel without prior notice.

  • Audiovisual Viewing Rooms

Videotapes and DVD's can be viewed in the Library in one of two rooms.

  • The First Floor viewing room 108 is located between the main entrance and the Friends of Fondren office with several DVD/VCR players and monitors.
  • The Fourth Floor viewing room 410 has one monitor and DVD, VCR, PAL and laser disc players. Check out the key from the Circulation Desk.
