Loan Periods, Fees & Fines

What you may Borrow, Loan Periods, Fees & Fines, Lost & Damaged Materials


What you may borrow:

  • Books from the general collection, including books retrieved from the Library Service Center, as well as music CD's and video documentaries, circulate to all registered borrowers.
  • Feature films circulate to Rice borrowers (students, faculty and staff.)
  • Study rooms and interlibrary loan services are available for Rice borrowers (students, faculty and staff.)
  • Bound periodicals circulate to Rice borrowers (students, faculty and staff.)
Restrictions may apply to materials from the Business Information Center and Government Publications.

Reference books, current periodicals, and materials from the Woodson Research Center may only be used inside the library. 

Loan Periods for Books:

Graduate Students: 3 due dates annually, 4/20, 8/20, and 12/20
Rice Staff, including Lecturers, Adjunct Faculty, and Post-Doctoral/Research Associates:
3 due dates annually, 4/20, 8/20, and 12/20
Rice Faculty:1 due date annually: 5/1
                     Non-Rice-affiliated Borrowers (including Friends of Fondren, HARLiC, OCLC and On-Site Interlibrary Loan): 
28 days
Books on Course Reserve have short loan periods and restrictions on who may check them out.

As a courtesy, the library mails notices for overdue materials; however, borrowers are responsible for fines even if an overdue notice is not received.  All materials will have a due date stamped or written on a date slip at the time they are borrowed.


Lost & Damaged Material:

  • Material lost by a borrower is billed for its replacement value, plus a nonrefundable processing fee.
  • Materials damaged while charged to a borrower are billed at the cost of repair or replacement. 
  • All lost or damaged materials remain the property of Fondren Library.
