Tableau Public III: Learning Tableau with Projects

Want to have more practices with Tableau? Come to this project-based course, where you could sharpen your Tableau skills. You will use the provided data files to answer a few questions. Your solutions could be a single-page viz or a multi-page data story. You will need to use the skills taught in the previous Tableau workshops to complete the projects, with guidance and help from the instructor along the way.

Tableau Public II: Intermediate

This workshop will cover the following topics:

  • Merge data from different data sheets/datasets
  • Create parameters and calculated fields
  • Understand differences between table calculation and regular calculation
  • Use quick table calculations
  • Create regular calculations on number, string, and date
  • Add analytics objects such as reference line to the view

Excel 101

 Introduction to using spreadsheets for beginners or a refresher for the sometime user. Covers basic features and options of Microsoft Excel, including how to organize and navigate tabular data, creating and using simple formulas, formatting worksheets and other helpful tips.

Tableau Public I: Introduction

Tableau is a fast rising and award-winning data visualization tool in Business Intelligence (BI) and Analytics Platforms.  It helps people see and understand data. In the presentation part of the workshop, we will introduce some basic BI terms, Tableau products, and some limitations of Tableau Public. 
In the hands-on part of the workshop,  using the DMC equipment circulation data as a sample data set, we will cover:
 • how to connect to data
• how to create charts to visualize data in worksheets

Getting Started with GitHub

Would you like to better manage software versions and collaborate with other researchers? GitHub is a widely-adopted code repository that supports collaboratively developing software and other text-based projects. This hands-on workshop will introduce participants to the basics of GitHub, such as setting up GitHub, creating a branch, and committing changes. We will also look at a few examples of how researchers are using GitHub. Please bring your laptop!

How to Manage Your Data

Drowning in data? Not sure how to organize and back it up? This hands-on, interactive workshop will share tips for effectively organizing, documenting and storing research data. Participants will walk away with ideas for completing a data inventory and data storage/ backup plan for their own data, as well as tips for writing data management plans (as required by many grant agencies).
