Updated July 9, 2020

What’s changed at Fondren as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic?

  • Library pick up service: Faculty, staff, and students can pick up books and other circulating materials with minimal contact. Here’s what you need to know.
  • No building access: The library building remains closed until further notice. We continue to provide services, resources, and consultation online. We anticipate building access, limited to Rice ID-card holders, beginning in early August.
  • Increased support for teaching and learning: Library staff are available to assist faculty and staff with teaching online, making materials available that all students can access, and supporting students with research projects and assignments.
  • Archives and Special Collections: Like the rest of Fondren, Woodson Research Center is closed to the public. If you have any questions or would like to consult with an archivist, please contact woodson@rice.edu or (713) 348-2586. Once Fondren opens for the Fall semester, the Woodson Research Center will be open to Rice ID-card holders for onsite research on an appointment basis, and open to distance reference requests for outside researchers.
  • Course reserves: We will try to find electronic versions of resources for use as course reserves, although physical reserves are not currently available. We plan for reserves to be available in the fall semester.
  • Interlibrary loan: We continue to deliver articles and book chapters electronically, though many requests may be delayed or unfilled due to numerous libraries still being closed. Questions? Contact ill@rice.edu
  • Purchase requests: You can still request the purchase of electronic or physical materials, but physical materials might take longer to arrive. E-books have a short turnaround time after being approved and purchased.
  • New chat service: You may notice a new tab at the side of our webpages and on OneSearch that says “Ask Us.” This chat service is staffed by Fondren library staff M-F, 9 am-5 pm, and you can get live help with any questions you may have.

What hasn’t changed?

  • Online access: All of our eBooks, online journals, databases, and other streaming/electronic materials remain available as usual.
  • Get help: Contact Us for quick research or reference questions or to consult with a subject librarian.
