This training session is a new addition to Kelley Center's government information literacy instruction series - Unlocking the Power of Governnent Information.
About
This hands-on training is part of the Open Government Data for Research training series offered by the Kelley Center for Government Information. We will use real-world datasets from the U.S. Census Bureau about Harris County to perform advanced analysis and visualization in Excel. The goal is to explore the relationships between income, education, race, and gender in Harris County, Texas, and to make sense of the data. You will learn how to:
- Search for and select census data
- Download census data and open it in Excel
- Clean up census data in Excel
- Visualize the cleaned data using charts
- Generate ranked lists and use a combination of searching and mapping functions on data.census.gov for easy yet powerful analysis
Examples of tasks you will perform:
- Identify which tract has the highest average household income
- Determine where this tract is located in Harris County, and map the tract, showing roads and neighborhood areas (hint: use data.census.gov)
- Obtain the profile data for this tract
- Conduct correlation analysis using Excel
- Conduct ANOVA analysis using Excel

It is open to any one.
Prerequisite
- Required: Introduction to Census Data and Data Tools
- Highly recommended: Excel Course Training 1-3

It is your responsibility to notify the instructor if you will no longer be able to attend.
