Course Information
This short course will teach you the basics of the U.S. Decennial Census vs ACS, show you how to use Census API to get the data, and how to use the R/ggplot package to map Census population data in RStudio.
Prerequisites:
1. Prior to the workshop, students must have the RStudio Desktop version on their personal device, which can be downloaded for free from https://www.rstudio.com/products/rstudio/ The latest version of RStudio is used for this course.
If you do not have R on your computer, you need to download the latest version of R: R: The R Project for Statistical Computing (r-project.org)
2. Students must also request and obtain a personal API Key from https://api.census.gov/data/key_signup.html For Organization Name, enter "Rice University".
3. It is highly recommended to take
- R basics and ggplot training
- Introduction to Census Data and Data Tools (Virtual Session)
