What is America250@Fondren and what does it offer?
As America approaches 250 years since its founding, Fondren Library kicks off America250@Fondren in January 2026 with a series of exhibits and activities celebrating America’s 250th anniversary.
The program is a cross-library collaboration and will be updated monthly throughout the year of 2026 to advance civic education and civic engagement, in alignment with supporting Rice University Momentus Strategic Plan and new Fondren Library Strategic Plan.
Guided by the Fondren Library theme “Reflect on the Past, Engage with the Present, and Envision the Future,” these events explore history, civic engagement, and democracy through thought-provoking exhibits throughout the library building, Civics Reading Club, talks, lectures, workshops, music concerts, games, movies, storytelling, pop up events, crafts and hand-on interactive activities, and more.
Who is this program for?
The program is primarily oriented toward Rice undergraduate and graduate students, but free and open to all Rice and the general public community. The scope is not limited to early American history.
- We invite you to explore with us the different perspectives of American history and get involved to shape together the present and future history. The future of history starts today.
- We also actively look for partners, from all subject areas, ranging from departments, centers, instructors, K12 educators, field trip and camp organizers, to civic student club leaders and other groups across Rice, to collaborate and shape a meaningful, inclusive year of learning, reflection, and action.

Statement
The America250@Fondren program is a nonpartisan, educational initiative that invites reflection, dialogue, and critical engagement with the full complexity of American history. The program explores political, social, artistic, athletic, cultural, scientific, engineering, and technological developments, and their impact on our shared present and future.
The program does not endorse specific political positions or administrations. Rather, it aligns with Fondren Library’s mission to support inquiry, historical context, and the exploration of multiple perspectives. Fondren Library provides access to resources, information expertise, and a safe, non-judgmental space for learning, reflection, and dialogue. The program encourages critical thinking, balanced perspectives, and thoughtful engagement with both celebrated and contested aspects of American history, while maintaining institutional neutrality and academic integrity.
