Addressing Environmental Impacts of AI

Prerequisites:

None. No prior experience with AI is required.

Overview:

According to the Proposed Rice Responsible AI Values, “When selecting AI tools and infrastructure, Rice should weigh environmental costs alongside performance and ensure they do not undermine Rice’s 2030 carbon neutrality commitment.” This workshop will explore ways to uphold the value of environmental stewardship by examining how AI impacts the environment and what we can do to minimize and mitigate these impacts. We will look at strategies such as using an AI carbon footprint calculator, employing smaller or local language models, and pursuing more efficient approaches (e.g. pruning, conscious prompting, etc.).
