Fondren Library Code of Conduct 

Your Responsibility. Respecting Rice Community. 

Fondren Library welcomes students, faculty, and visiting scholars to its shared spaces for learning, discovery, and academic collaboration. We invite all individuals to help cultivate an environment that supports intellectual curiosity, inclusivity, and mutual respect. The Rules for User Conduct outline the responsibilities each user accepts when using Fondren’s spaces, services, and resources. 

1. Respect our Shared Spaces 

  • Treat Fondren’s spaces, collections, technology, and furnishings with care. 

  • Let our Service Desk know if you see a spill or other damage, so it can be handled quickly. 

2. Be Mindful of Others 

  • Manage your noise level – take phone calls outside, or in busier Fondren spaces. 

  • Use headphones when listening to audio and keep the volume low. 

  • Fondren’s floor levels go from collaborative (1st floor) to quiet/swipe access only (6th floor). 

3. Use Resources Responsibly 

  • Check out materials using one of our two self-checkout machines, or check out with Service Desk staff (1st floor). 

  • Respect study room reservations and return room keys on time. 

  • Observe Fondren’s Food and Drink policy, and keep food and drink away from Fondren’s physical collections and computer equipment. 

4. Commit to an Inclusive and Safe Environment 

  • Engage with others respectfully, regardless of background or identity. 

  • Report any behavior that disrupts the safety or dignity of others to staff at the Service Desk. Alternatively, you may report any concern anonymously using the Rice University Ethics Line. 

  • Use the library in accordance with the Rice University Code of Conduct, Standards of Ethical Conduct, and Appropriate Use of Information Technology rules. 

5. Be Accountable for Your Belongings…and See Something? Say Something! 

  • Keep personal items with you. 

  • Notify Service Desk staff immediately if you see someone vandalize Fondren material or remove items that belong to another library user.

6. Reach out to Fondren Staff…We’re Here to Help! 

  • Our Fondren Library Service Desk staff are here to help. Be curious! Ask questions and share feedback. 

  • Be courteous and respectful to Fondren staff. 

  • Follow directions when provided by Fondren staff, including requests to leave the building at closing time or during emergencies.
