Strategic Priority 1: Empower Students to Explore, Produce, and Share Ideas and Knowledge

Graduate students often occupy the same study carrel for months or even years while completing theses and dissertations. These spaces become more than desks; they become workplaces, laboratories for ideas, and home bases during some of the most demanding years of a student's academic career. Many of Fondren's graduate study carrels have remained largely unchanged for decades. A thoughtful renovation would provide updated furnishings, improved lighting, fresh finishes, better electrical access, and enhanced acoustics to create spaces that better support sustained scholarship. Donor support would directly improve the daily experience of graduate students while reinforcing Fondren Library's role as an intellectual home for advanced research at Rice.
